The Mission of One

Writing this column, I’m spending more than a few minutes staring at my fish tank.

I’m not knocking my fish here, but they don’t seem to have a plan. One fish sticks close to another, following him (or her) all over the tank. The two wander up, down and around but nothing truly gets accomplished. As for the other fish, the results aren’t much better.

Perhaps they know exactly what the plan for the day is. Maybe at night, they sit down and hammer out an agenda: Okay, Silver. Tomorrow we need you to scout out the rock on the west side, then dart over to the fake sunken ship every 4.5 seconds. Now Orange, you’ve got to spend your time at the front of the fishbowl, capturing Kirk’s interest while Silver takes a lunch break behind rock number seven over there.

Yep, my fish may attack each day with the fervent goal of providing me entertainment for me and my family. Or, they could be just darting around. Whether my fish have a mission is up for grabs.

But, we do.

Our mission is simple; we change hearts. For some, it is a heart change from seeing a pregnancy as an inconvenience to be eliminated, to embracing the life of a new baby.

For others the heart change could be a spiritual one, running into the arms of Jesus Christ.

And for some, this may mean finally freeing a heart from the pain of a past abortion.

It’s not complicated. If you are in pregnancy help ministry, you get this. We’re not about winning arguments; we are about winning hearts to the joy of embracing life, the joy of embracing the Lord, and the joy of freedom from a decision made long ago.

Nope, my fish likely have no mission. But we know ours. And you know what is so powerful about our mission? It is a mission of One.

All God is asking of us, at any given moment, is to reach One. We cannot shift a culture overnight, but we can reach one. We cannot be about reaching one thousand hearts at once, but at once, we can touch One.

One.

Regardless of whether our ministry’s budget is 50,000 or $5 million, or our client load is 2 per week or 200 per month, the mission is One.

Let’s always remember that the One may be the next person who walks in our door. The One may be someone who asks a seemingly innocuous question at a church presentation (“Do you people do post-abortion counseling?”). Anyone could be One.

The One may be that person who asks, “Why do you do what you do?” Our answer may start a process which brings the One on board our team.

Or the One may be a client in our offices, asking, “Why are all of you so nice to me?”

We never know where we will find the One. But we know the One comes across our path more than we might believe.

Our challenge? If we are to fulfill our God-given mission to change hearts and in turn, change a culture, let’s always be on the lookout for the One.

I’m not sure who or what my fish are looking out for today, but as I watch them swimming about I’m reminded, “Am I fishing for the One today?”

As the pregnancy help community, let’s not worry too much about saving the world. Let’s just look for One who needs something we can give.
